Current Projects

Jet's blog.png

Occasionally, I am tasked with writing a blog post for my internship alongside the photography work.

Over time, my identity has been shaped by challenges and growth, especially noticeable from high school to now. I've gone far outside of my comfort zone, rebuilt myself and continue to address past trauma, while also navigating my life as a queer and trans individual. The ongoing body of work addresses identity, self discovery, doubt, dissociation/derealization, and gender nonconformity.

Past Projects

Still Life

Each image is a principle from Szarkowski’s The Photographer’s Eye: the thing itself, detail, frame, time, and vantage point.

While photographing one subject across three weeks, I learned the use of white balances in different lighting situations as well as schemes and compositions.

This project served to increase my awareness of how the photograph can alter and express our understanding of space and the complexities of what and how we see.

In an anthropomorphic society, this genre is often overlooked in favor of portraiture – Basically, as a human audience, we like to look at ourselves. On the other hand, objects are often reified and portrayed with quasi-religious stature in commercial product photography. We tend to find fewer contemporary examples of still life in visual art/gallery culture than we do of portraits and landscapes. This project helped me learn how to control key light, fill light, and accent light.

Portraiture

FINAL 2_edited.jpg

The term “concept” can vary wildly, but for the purposes of this assignment we will be focusing on concepts that are social/cultural in nature - meaning the ideas behind each student’s concept may be important to them personally (and even approached in that manner), they should be of a larger social/cultural significance and concern.

For this project, I took an existing image from art or popular culture and attempted to recreate the image in terms of lighting, subject and style. The purpose was to recreate the lighting using strobe and studio lights. I chose to deconstruct the image and focus on the lighting and pose rather than matching the background.

This project was to get me started with directing others in both studio and location environments. It allowed me to continue exploring my knowledge of natural and artificial exterior and interior lighting, and introduce studio strobe lights. Social and technical skills are both important when working with subjects, and I learned how to manage lighting set-ups while also establishing rapport with the humans working with, for, or around me.

Portraiture is one of the most common uses of photography. Yet, even with this ubiquity of the genre we rarely consider the connection between what we see, how we see, and how the camera will affect how we understand the subject.

This assignment is designed to get me used to using location lights outside of the studio. It was also a useful assignment to use as a testing ground for my final. Environmental portraiture is encouraged so that I may gain skill directing subjects on location shooting assignments.

Environment/Documentary

I was assigned the role of photographer for the Community Awareness Briefing held on February 24, 2023.

Color makes a huge impact on what we create and how it is eventually interpreted and analyzed. I was tasked with photographing complimentary, dominant/monochromatic, harmonic, isolated, and subdued color schemes.

01 copy.jpg

I was tasked with photographing one space at different times of day all done with manual exposure, use of daylight white balance, and exploration of blending modes, masking, and spot healing.
